What NZ washout means for Pakistan semi-final qualification

COLOMBO: The washout of the Pakistan vs New Zealand Super Eight clash has made every game crucial in Group 2 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The persistent drizzle started immediately after the toss—which Pakistan won and elected to bat—at Premadasa Stadium did not let up, and the umpires finally called off the match at 9:05 PM local time (3:35 PM GMT).

Not even a five-over match was possible within the 10:16 PM (4:46 PM GMT) time limit, giving both teams one point each.

To qualify for the semifinals without relying on net run rate, Pakistan simply needs to win two of their remaining matches against England and Sri Lanka.

The wins will ensure Pakistan finishes with five points, effectively securing a semifinal spot.

The second scenario for Pakistan’s qualification is to win one match and lose the other, with their fate then determined by the other results and the NRR.

With two losses in their remaining matches, Pakistan would be left with just one point, resulting in immediate elimination.

The defeat effectively made each match a knockout. Leaving very little margin for error.

However, the real situation will become clearer after the clash between Sri Lanka and England on February 22.

Pakistan is placed in Group 2 along with Sri Lanka, England, and New Zealand.

Their next match will be against England on February 24, followed by the final match against hosts Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, India, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and the defending champions West Indies are placed in Group 1.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals.
