Real Madrid Officially Out Of Super League Project

After nearly five years of dispute with UEFA, EFC and UEFA have reached an agreement to end the controversial Super League project.

In April 2021, Real Madrid were the leading voice in the new movement to break away from UEFA and form a new midweek competition featuring the top clubs of Europe. Initially it was proposed by 12 teams all across the top 5 leagues of European Football on 18th April 2021. The following days saw three more teams being invited, those being: Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain.

Following backlash from fans including protests outside Stamford Bridge ahead of their match up against Brighton & Hove Albion where team buses were blocked from entering and many other such encounters for the teams participating in the Super League Project. From 20th April 2021 to 1st June 2024 all teams except Barcelona and Real Madrid had left the super league project. On 7th February 2026 Barcelona officially withdrew from the Super League Project. On 11th February 2026, Real Madrid have now also officially left the super league project.

The statement from UEFA reads:

“Following months of discussions conducted in the best interests of European football, UEFA, European Football Clubs (EFC), and Real Madrid CF announce that they have reached an agreement of principles for the well-being of European club football, respecting the principle of sporting merit with emphasis on long-term club sustainability and the enhancement of fan experience through the use of technology.”

The statement then ends with a general acknowledgement of Real Madrid’s lawsuits against UEFA, ones that will seemingly be resolved in the near future.

“This agreement of principles will also serve to resolve their legal disputes related to the European Super League, once such principles are executed and implemented.”
